The history of Cafaggio dates back more than 600 years, with the first document attesting its existence in 1408, when the property was owned by the Benedictine monks of Siena before passing the estate into the hands of various owners from wealthy families to hospitals. Today, the estate covers more than 60 hectares and is nestled in the ‘Conca d’Oro’ (Golden Basin), an area recognised as the finest zone for producing Chianti Classico.

Cafaggio is located in Greve, Chianti and has a rich history that dates back more than 600 years, with the first document, a parchment that was conserved in the estate’s archives, attesting its existence dating back to 1408. In the late fifteenth century, the property was owned by the Benedictine monks of Siena, before passing into the hands of various owners, including the famous Niccolini family from Florence.

The estate was eventually sold to Florentine Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova, and records show that even back then, the farm produced a great variety of food products, including wine and oil. In the 19th century, Villa Cafaggio, which derives from the estate’s original name ‘Cahago,’ which means ‘enclosed, cultivated field,’ was passed to the Boddi family, and at the end of the 1860s, the property was purchased as a country house by the Farkas family, but after more than a century of neglecting to upkeep the vineyards and property, 1967 the Farkas decided not only to renovate the wine cellars, but also replant the vineyards and olive groves.

From 2005 to 2015, Villa Cafaggio was managed by La-Vis Group, and most recently in 2016 it became property of the Istituto Atesino di Sviluppo (IAS) S.p.A., a financial service holding company based in Trento which worked on revitalising the brand and focused on growing the brand including growing export opportunities.

The estate is nestled into the ‘Conca d’Oro’ or the ‘Golden Basin,’ which is an area recognized as the finest zone for producing Chianti Classico. Today, the main priority of Cafaggio is to maintain the focus on the production process across the entire supply chain, which will ensure a further increase in the quality of its wines. Cafaggio seeks to strengthen its role as a niche producer of Chianti Classico and to develop and improve what already exists.

Cafaggio covers approximately 60 hectares, 30 of which are cultivated as specialized vineyards and about 3 as olive groves, with the remaining area being woodland. Situated in the hamlet of Greve, Chianti in Panzano, the estate is nestled in the ‘Conca d’Oro’ or the ‘Golden Basin,’ and area recognized as the finest zone for producing Chianti.

We are currently out of stock of Cafaggio wines and will be restocking soon. Please contact us for further information, or these wines can be purchased through Qantas Wine.
