This winemaking project began in the early 1990’s at the centenary estate where their family has been producing Port since the last years of the 19th century. Their commitment to the production of quality wines has been, since the first moment, the heart and soul of Quinta do Portal.
Many of the Quinta do Portal wines feature the Touriga Nacional grape. This is a variety of red wine grape, low-yielding, and considered by many to be Portugal’s finest. Touriga Nacional provides structure and body to wine, with high tannins and concentrated flavors of black fruit. Touriga Franca on the other hand is lighter and more perfumed than Touriga Nacional, adding finesse to the wine. Both grapes grow in the hard, rocky exposed hillsides of the Douro. Wine writer Jancis Robinson compares a blend of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca to the partnership between Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the former providing structure, the latter filling out the bouquet.
