Gold - Berliner Wein Trophy
4 stars - John Lewis (Newcastle Herald)Here’s a chance to extend your vinous horizons with Sicilian, Spanish and Italian wines made from the nero d’Avola, lagrein, tempranillo, graciano and mazuelo grapes. This refreshingly crisp rosé is from the lagrein (lah-grine) variety from northern Italy’s Trentino Alto Adige Region. It has 12% alcohol and pale salmon pink hues. The front palate features zingy strawberry flavour, the middle palate pomegranate, red apple, mint and flint characters and the finish gunmetal acid. Buy it at singlevineyards.com/product/2018-mezzacorona-rose-i-classici/ and drink now with seafood wontons. Lagrein’s origins date back to the 17th century in the Lagarina Valley of Trentino. In Australia there are now about 40 growers, mainly in cool-climate areas.
92 pts - Angus Hughson (The Wine Pilot)This is a very different take on European Rose, from near the Dolomites in Northern Italy, in the region of Trentino-Alto Adige. Made from the local Lagrein grape, it’s pretty and shy but also quite full-bodied making for a food friendly style. It has very pure raspberry aromas with a slight edge of green herbs and spice. It’s then dry and textural in the mouth, with multiple layers of fruit and then has an elegant and very long finish. A great European alternative to the wines from the South of France.
