Located not far from Rioja is the little wine region of Cariñena, which is home to generous and rustic Spanish reds. This wine starts vibrant and fruit forward wth layers of sweet raspberry, dark cherry and spicy aromas. But then it takes a rustic turn on the palate with its savoury and bone dry style and flavours of aged meat, earth and old barrels. There are also chewy tannins in the mix that support a long and fleshy finish. It’s made with the table in mind and would be a tasty match with charcoal-grilled Pinchitos.
90 pts - Stuart Robinson (Vinsomniac)Plum and white pepper lead, guiding the drinker to a palate that then conveys more of a bitter and savoury palate. For all that it feels light through the middle, offering up an airy and bouncy tannin profile. Has a good level of carry of flavour - a good marker of quality - that tugs along that tannin and dark earth, savoury character. Hard one to judge. Serve with spicy grilled sausage, such as quality Chorizo or Luganega.
