2022 Eisenstone ‘Moppa’ Shiraz SR806

The Richardson Vineyard lies on the boundary between Greenock and Moppa and marks the shift from deep loamy soils to outcrops of quarts and fractured ironstone. The vineyard was dry grown for many years but is steadily being revitalised since Brett and Elaine took over the property. The grapes for this wine come from the “Bottom” block which has deeper soils and sits alongside a small creek bed that runs through the property.

The grapes were fermented in small batches and after fermentation was matured in 50% new French oak for 20 months prior to bottling. Minimal intervention is used in the winemaking process and the wine is moved the minimal times prior to bottling and is not cold stabilised or filtered.

Color: Deep ruby red.

Nose: Charming dark cherry and mulberry aromas.

Palate: Subtle earthy tones before opening out into a mid-weight style supported by supple, integrated tannins with excellent drinkability over the short to medium term.

96 pts - Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot SA Guide)

Such an impressive example of Barossa Shiraz here, this is made from grapes harvested from the Richardson Vineyard, located on the boundary of Greenock and Moppa. It spends 20 months in French oak, half of which is new. 800 bottles. This is the darkest colour and offers the most gorgeous perfumes. It is ripe, rich, full of life, and so very approachable. Notes of black cherries, florals, aniseed and chocolate, with a hint of cherry cola emerging on the palate. The oak has been beautifully crafted here. There is balance, intensity and even a touch of elegance throughout. There is bright acidity, energy, soft and silky tannins, and the balance really is immaculate. This has such a promising future with at least eight to 12 years ahead. Brilliant stuff.

95 pts - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Very deep purple-red colour with aromas of eucalyptus mint/Dencorub linament, bright and lively, while the palate is just full-bodied and bright, with good intensity and length shrouded in fine-grained powdery tannins. A fine and elegant Barossa, with oak subtly played and superb balance.
