Color: Pale golden straw.
Nose: Aromas of jasmine and nectarine combine with a touch of warm spice.
Palate: Deliciously textural and delicate with flavours of pear and hints of chalky minerality. The crisp, balanced acidity provides a savoury and refreshing finish.
WINEMAKERS : Suzanne Little / Ian Little Vermentino is a relative newcomer on the Australian landscape but is set become a favourite due to its natural texture and versatility. Vermentino is Spanish in origin but is believed to have travelled first to Corsica and then to Italy where it is the dominant white wine grape of Sardinia. It is a late-ripening grape variety which loves a hot dry climate; a natural choice for the Hunter Valley.
VITICULTURE : The grapes for this wine are grown on the historic Roxburgh vineyard in the Upper Hunter Valley. Grafted onto 30-year Chardonnay vines the decision to trial Vermentino is certainly paying off. True to its reputation as a late ripening variety we usually harvest the Vermentino after all of our Hunter reds are picked.
WINEMAKING NOTES : The free run portion is fermented separately to the pressings. 20% of the free run juice and 50% of the pressings are fermented naturally in two and three-yearold French oak. The balance of the juice is tank fermented with cultured yeast. The wine is held on yeast lees for four months to add a creamy texture to the palate. A portion of the pressings are also added back to give an extra dimension to the palate weight.
