Founded in 1923 by the Marchal family, Domaine de Galuval is one of the oldest winegrower-harvesters in Cairanne. The winery began with a qualitative approach from its inception by making its own vintages and daring to bottle them rather than selling their grapes to cooperatives, pioneering their approach to quality that they continue to this day.
Located between the villages of Cairanne and Rasteau in Southern Rhône, the estate is known for its diverse terroirs and old vines. The name ‘Galuval’ combines ‘gallus,’ which is Latin for rooster and symbolises pride, and ‘uva,’ which translates to grapes, referencing its old heritage and the symbolic importance of the Gallus.
Recently, the estate has decided to give a second life to this winery steeped in history and tradition. This second life involves a complete overhaul of the wine range, a new identity with a brand new label, and the transition to more sustainable farming, including the goal to become certified organic as soon as possible.
Domaine de Galuval continues to be committed to a qualitative and innovated approach, notably through its HVE certification from the 2020 vintages and organic certification in the works. They also commission drones to map their terroir and carry out deep plot cutting, use gravity in the cellar flows for optimal quality, and use a combination of oak, concrete, aluminum at each stage to optimize the maturation process.
Winemaker Emmanuel Couzi’s philosophy is above all about fruit balance: exceptional winemaking leaves the fruit to do all the talking. Low intervention and perfect growing conditions combines with careful parcel selection and judicious aging result in modern wines that are true to the individual character of each year.
