2025 Windowrie ‘Pig in the House’ Picpoul Blanc

Before Windowrie became what it is today, their homestead had its own distinct charm. The previous owner, a devoted pig farmer, shared a bond with his animals unlike any other – he welcomed them into his home, quite literally. The pigs roamed freely, becoming as much a part of the house as the walls and the roof themselves.

When the O’Dea family took over and made the homestead their own and welcomed their first child, they began to see their home through a new lens. The thought of anything potentially affecting the purity of their home environment became a pressing concern, which led to a pivotal decision to transition their vineyard practices to organic methods, ensuring that the land, the vines, and the home itself remained as natural and untouched as possible.

Pig in the House honours the quirky history of the O’Dea homestead and the commitment they’ve made to organic farming. It’s a tribute to the past and a promise to the future – just as the pigs found their place inside the house, the O’Dea family has found theirs in nurturing the land with care and respect.

Color: Pale straw, vibrant.

Nose: The Picpoul Blanc is a mildly aromatic wine demonstrating varietal Beurre Bosc pear and ripe lime, as well as an evident ocean spray saline quality.

Palate: The aromas follow onto the palate and are complimented with a delicate structure, which adds to the food friendliness of the wine. This wine is a great accompaniment to oysters, seafood in general, and sunny afternoons.

Pairings: Fresh oysters, delicate sashimi, and zesty ceviche, all served in their natural, flavourful glory.

Picpoul, or Piquepoul if you prefer, or even Picapoll, is grown in the Rhône and Languedoc regions of France, with a little in the Catalonia district in Spain as well, but it fell out of favour for many years. It is making a comeback and it has been in this country for a bit over a decade. Early signs are extremely promising. This example from the Central Ranges region of NSW, shows some of the typical pears, limes and saline nature of the variety. Pale yellow in colour, the nose reveals aromas of citrus, peaches, pears, bath salts, florals and minerals. An intriguing style with lots to like, the wine is balanced with energy and very good length. A fine line of acidity runs the full journey. The finish gives us characters reminiscent of fields of lavender. Enjoy over the next half dozen years.

Winsor Dobbin (Wine of the Week)

Piquepoul, also known as Picpoul, or Picapoll, is a white grape that is seen at its best in the southern Languedoc region of Mediterranean France, where it is enjoyed with fresh local oysters. It is known for its fresh and bright acid and was only planted in Australia in the 2010s. This impressive version comes from the O'Dea family from Windowrie in the Central Western Ranges of NSW, and is distributed by Single Vineyard Sellers. It is unoaked, showcasing first-run juice, grown and made organically, and designed to be enjoyed chilled it its youth. Such a fun summer wine with its pear, apple and lime zest characters. Pair with a seafood platter, or some fish fingers.
