A Journey Across Spain

By: SVS Categories: Stock Updates, Wines

Our shipment from Spain has arrived and we are very excited to be restocked on Campos de Espana, Amigo de la Tierra, and La Sorda!

These 6 wines hail from all over Spain ranging from the north in Rioja to the south in Jumilla. The wines bring together specialists in each grape variety from all across the country to create the best possible wines. The aim for these wines is to celebrate the people, stories, and culture that come with the wines, because without the people, the grapes would never become wine.

Campos de Espana

Campos de España is a range of authentic, great value varietal wines from Spain that was created with the idea of showcasing the major Spanish grape varieties in good, everyday drinking styles. These highlight the “ABCs” of Spanish wines – Grenache, Tempranillo, and Monastrell. This brand brings together specialists in each grape variety from all around Spain to give the best possible results.

The range began more than ten years ago with Campos de Luz Grenache, meaning “the sunny fields,” from the Ebro Valley, in the north east of Spain. This wine represents quality, flavour, value, and above all, people. The winery, which was built in 2003, is built right on the plain in the centre of the vineyards, ensuring a quick transition from plant to tank.

Once the Grenache was established, the range expanded to the Campos de Viento Tempranillo, meaning “the windy fields,” from central Spain. La Mancha is famous for its flat plains but also for its historical landmark, the ancient windmills of Don Quixote, symbolising that the most notable element of the area isn’t the rain, but the wind.

Finally for the third “ABC,” they needed a Monastrell wine, so they found Campos de Risca, meaning “the stoney fields,” from the south east of Spain. This is a wine which is not so much grown as it is mined and extracted from the least promising of sols. The fields contain about a foot deep of stone, which protect the vines from the harsh climate.

2019 Campos de Viento Tempranillo
La Mancha, Spain

91 pts – Stuart Robinson (Vinsomniac): “Carries the air of earth and baked raspberry – like you’d find in a baked muffin; fruit, yet not sweet. Feels lighter across the palate, at least initially, before a darker manifestation sets in. Suggestions of black pepper and clove, a carry of decent length. Pretty rugged, gutsy, not without conviction.”

2021 Campos de Luz Garnacha
Ebro Valley, Spain

Deep red in colour with a deeper weight of colour than for a regular Garnacha. Scents of fresh blackberries and cherries, together with a hint of black pepper. Full and rich in the mouth, with the fruit immediately to the fore, a broad pallet and a long juicy finish which holds its presence without astringent tannins.

2015 Campos de Risca
Jumilla, Spain

Intense and deep bordeaux red colour. The nose shows both the typical aromas of dried fruits, figs and prunes, but also in this cooler year, fresh juicy berry flavours and elements of violets. The mouth is juicy and refreshing, full of soft fruit and tannins.

Amigo de la Tierra

This is the organic project for the group, meaning “friend of the Earth,” coming from the center of Spain in La Mancha. The goal is to make organic and sustainable good wines, that can be made long term and keep people on the land.

2021 Amigo de la Tierra Organic Tempranillo Syrah
La Mancha, Spain

Intense and deep bordeaux red colour. The nose is wonderfully varietal, with plenty of aromas of freshly pressed berries, plums and cherries especially. The palate is lively and rounded.

La Sorda

La Sorda is based in the wine region of Rioja. This winery was built in 2003 and spreads over 25 hectares of 8 plots ranging from 20 to 80 years old. La Sorda is a single village project to express the history of this exceptional terroir. They are wines with very local character, rather than standard generic Rioja character, in other words more ‘vineyard’ based than the classic ‘barrel-based’ mindset of most Rioja producers.

2020 La Sorda Vendimia Seleccionada
Rioja, Spain

The first aromas to appear are those of gentle strawberry and raspberry, with bakery aromas and subtle hints of cinnamon and spice. On the palate it is juicy and has a fine acidity, leaving a final sensation of beautiful finesse.

2015 La Sorda Reserva
Rioja, Spain

Intense ruby, with a brick rim showing its barrel ageing. This wine offers aromas of cinnamon and sage surrounded by fruity notes of cherries and blackberries underscored by a mineral component. Deep and ripe on the palate, with a velvety, silky, enveloping mouthfeel.
