New Kids On The Block

Highgate

We are excited to announce our new wine from Highgate: 2022 Highgate Chardonnay Hunter Valley! After several years making Highgate Chardonay in Orange (and several years where we couldn’t get any fruit from Orange – due to smoke, floods, storms, hail) we have finally been able to secure fruit in the Hunter Valley. Molly and Stu developed this wine alongside Liz Jackson from First Creek, we’re really happy with the wine, stylistically very consistent. We also finally been able to produce a full vintage for the first time in 3 years. So plenty to go around, fill yer boots!

Winery Spotlight

Highgate has always had a multi-regional presence, developing high-quality parcels of fruit with passionate winemakers into wines that clearly represent the region – grown in the best
places to be enjoyed in the best places around the world.

The brand was inspired by the namesake hilltop suburb of London, and the traditional swearing by the horns when entering its pubs. The wines represent what we consider contemporary Antipodean classics and showcase a selection of well-made, crowd-pleasing varietals. Elegance and finesse are the hallmarks of the house style.

The whole range has been vegan since 2012. Highgate has been moving towards organic viticulture for many years now; in doing so we hold true to the maxim “grown in the best places”, while maintaining the imperative to present wines at the right price. Our regional flexibility has allowed us to continue to meet these aims.

The Wines

2021 Highgate Organic Shiraz South Australia

Double Gold – Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Gold – Mundus Vini Grand International Wine Awards

Red berries dominates the nose with some sweet vanilla and oaky roundness. On the palate, dark fruit is supported by moderate tannins and a gentle return of the white pepper with a medium finish and lingering mulberry notes.

2021 Highgate Organic Cabernet Sauvignon South Australia

Gold – Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Aromas of intense blackcurrant, hints of redcurrant, tobacco, cedary spice and subtle leafiness. The palate is silky and rounded, with rich blackcurrant, dark juicy fruit and rhubarb. Flavours of tobacco and cedar contribute to the wine’s satisfying depth, and fine tannins give it elegant structure and mouth feel.

NV Highgate Sparkling Chardonnay-Pinot Noir Cuvee Brut (Charmat)

94 pts – Winestate Magazine: Bold mature citrus bouquet; good yeast autolysis and zesty lemon/green apple flavours with a salivating citrus finish.

93 pts – Drinks Trade Magazine: Universally praised by all judges and the undisputed winner. This wine is a picture of elegance showing subtle detailed floral fruits well-matched by brioche complexity, finishing fine and long.

Pale straw with a fine and persistent bead in colour with aromas of lemon rind, shortbread and green apple. Chardonnay gives the wine a creamy, round mouth feel with some nice citrusy characters while the Pinot Noir adds some acidity allowing the wine to finish clean, crisp, refreshing and so good to share.

2016 Highgate Organic Shiraz Mudgee

93 pts – Kim Brebach (BWU20)

92 pts – Mike Bennie (Wine Business Magazine)

Deep plum red with brick highlights. Black fruit aromas including plum juice and blackberries, savoury bay leaf, with black and white pepper reminiscent of Hunter Valley shiraz. Dark fruit is supported by moderate tannins and a gentle return of the white pepper, a medium finish with lingering blackberry and mulberry notes.

2022 Highgate Chardonnay Hunter Valley

An inviting brilliant pale straw colour with fresh aromas of white and yellow stone fruit, with some notes of citrus fruit. The palate has generous ripe fruit flavours that are supported by subtle oak influences on the palate that is round and textured, and finishing with a lively touch of grapefruit.
