This is the big gun from the Veneto region – based near Verona, so think Romeo and Juliet, but would any other wine smell quite so sweet? A crimson/magenta hue, this is a wine with serious intensity. There are notes of chocolate, cloves, cassis, plums, black fruits, leather and a hint of axle grease (in the most positive way). The wine offers focus and bright acidity, which runs the full journey, and a lengthy journey it is. A wine which is generous but balanced, it concludes with delightfully silky tannins. Ten or twelve years will see the wine drinking beautifully, but you could also say that by then, it is only getting started.
93 pts - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)Deep, bold colour which still retains a tinge of purple in the meniscus. The bouquet is composed of savoury earthy and terracotta nuances plus raisin, fig and date dried-fruit characters. The wine is full-bodied and rich, with panforte and dried fruit flavours pervading, very good intensity and fleshy extract giving it a pleasing texture. Sweet fruit in the core. The tannins are mouth-puckering and the finish rolls on and on. It's moved well beyond the primary fruit stage and is quite complex: a very good, traditional example of the style.
